When you are engagement ring or ring shopping, you usually have the option to select the center stone and the mounting/setting separately. The center stone and the setting make the main parts of a ring.
Center Stone
The center stone refers to the main diamond in the middle of the setting. When a diamond mounting is a three-stone style, the two side stones are referred to as part of the semi-mounting. The center stone does not have to be a diamond. Sapphires and rubies center stones are quite popular for their hardness and colored sparkle.
Mounting/Semi-mounting/Setting
The Mounting (or semi-mounting) is basically the entire ring, without a center stone. It can be Plain, set with accent diamonds, or other Gemstones. The mounting is often referred to as the Setting. Rings are traditionally usually in metal but can be of almost any material: metal, plastic, stone, wood, bone, glass, gemstone to name a few. The most popular are 18k, 14k, white, yellow or rose gold, platinum & silver.
Stone Setting/Setting
The term "setting" refers to the act of securing the diamond in the ring. Channel set gemstones are placed into a metal channel, and flow side by side in a continuous row. Evidently stone setting is done after selecting a center stone and a mounting. The original or new gem stone will be carefully reset into your jewellery. This is delicate work that requires careful attention to detail, and will completed by experienced jeweler, usually stone setter, using custom made equipment to and industry approved methods.
